Kala Pani the cellular Jail in Andaman & Nicobar Islands

The poignant history of freedom fighters who endured imprisonment at the infamous Cellular Jail in Port Blair, Andaman, and Nicobar Islands, has been immortalized in the book Andaman Ki Vyatha Nicobar Ki Katha. Authored by GRP Wamanrao, this insightful work captures the struggles and sacrifices of these brave souls. The book was recently unveiled at a launch event held at Patrakar Bhavan.

Retired Bombay High Court judge Kishore Rohi, former minister Nana Embadwar, renowned intellectual MG Vaidya, joint commissioner of police Shivaji Bodkhe, acclaimed poet Sudhakar Gaidhani, and Sanjay Nathe, head of Nathe Publications, graced the occasion with their presence.

The Cellular Jail is also referred to as 'kala pani'. Wamanrao, in his book, says that the name 'kala pani' was given when the Andaman-Nicobar Manual was created under the colonial era 'penal settlement' regime in which the definition of 'transfer station for life' i.e. punishment to kala (lifetime) pani (water) was inscribed.

According to Wamanrao, the islands are as important to the nation as other states and union territories. He remarked, “When discussing India's expanse, many measure from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, which isn't accurate. Since the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are part of India, the country's length should be calculated from Kashmir to 'Pygmalion Point,' now called Indira Point.
